Haides is the alias of 21-year-old Callum Garvey, based in Croydon, South London. He has been producing music since the age of 14, moving through trance, dubstep and house inspirations.
"Need This" reveals this in its strong combination of great writing and production elements. The track begins as a dramatic, piano and strings led mid-tempo track with an emotional and immaculately delivered vocal performance by Frances Wood. It gradually crescendos with rhythmic big-room synth stabs joining to create a soundscape reminiscent, but even more nuanced, than that of Flume.
Garvey says:
“For ‘Need This’ I wanted to create a fusion between real and electronic instruments. I started with a couple chords on the piano and added in some more orchestral elements with the string section and drums. After that it was about making sure the chorus hit home with some heavy synths. It was important to keep the balance right between the real and electronic instruments in order to anchor the emotions in the vocals and to keep the energy flowing.”
His debut EP Faith is set to be released later this year.
