Indie music's very own Chance, The Rapper featured in this year's opening for the 2017 Emmys alongside Stephen Colbert. In case you missed it, an Emmy Award is a category of award that recognizes excellence in the television industry, that is why their opening act that humorously downplays television is all the more entertaining. The two sing a song that starts with Colbert telling people not to worry about the news, global warming and problems in the middle east, and to instead watch TV, while Chance raps about TV being a 'pleasant distraction' and that people should just record their favorite shows and show up at the protests instead.

Chance, The Rapper For President

However political his Emmy rap may seem, earlier in the year Chance explained that he is not into politics in his June cover story with Ebony. The cover read 'Chance for president' and delved into his take, in which he shared his thoughts that 'politics is a reason why a lot of stuff doesn’t get done.' He made it clear that he has no plans to get involved with, or be a part of the political world.

Donald Glover and Chance, The Rapper

As the Emmys rolled on, hints at a future collaboration between Chance and Donald Glover (AKA Childish Gambino) surfaced. Alongside his music career, Glover is a hard-working actor – whose efforts were rewarded at these 2017 Emmys – winning two awards for his show, Atlanta. One award was for directing the show, and the other was for acting in it – the first double win for directing and acting since 1977. This was followed by a backstage interview with the press, where he alluded to making music with Chance, The Rapper. When asked about his music, he said, “I feel like if I don’t make a Chance the Rapper mixtape...a bunch of 14-year-olds will kick my ass...I feel like I’ve gotta do something. I probably will.” Since the announcement, Chance has Retweeted the below Tweet:

While Chance, The Rapper might not be overly enamored with politics, Donald Glover used his opportunity in front of the mic to make a political statement. When receiving his second Emmy Award he said "I want to thank Trump for making black people number one on the most oppressed list. He's the reason I'm probably up here" in his acceptance speech.

LGBTQIA+ Support

For many people, the opportunity to stand in front of a mic and address a large portion of the world's population, who're glued to their TVs, is quite a momentous occasion. Take Emmy winner, Lena Waithe, who made history by becoming the first African American woman to take home an Emmy for comedy writing, and claimed support for the LGBTQIA+ community in her acceptance speech. And, with Chance in the limelight for his Emmy opener, fans are now unearthing his support for the LGBTQIA+ community too.

Earlier in the year, Chance's brother, Taylor Bennett, came out as bisexual, and Chance took to Twitter to show his support. The Tweet read, 'Love this man right here, through any and all," and was accompanied by a video celebrating Taylor's 21st birthday.
