Since last year's debut album Badlands, Halsey has quickly climbed the ladder to fame with her unique, yet hauntingly melodic, tunes. To avid listeners, it’s no surprise that neither she or her music fit a pop culture satisfying, cooking-cutting image. And in the latest issue of Rolling Stone, Halsey expresses exactly why that is.

According to the "New Americana" singer, her sound isn't easy to define according genre because genres are essentially false. In the magazine's February issue, Halsey gave her two cents on whether songs nowadays are the most permeable. “Genre in 2016 is just absolute bullshit. Half the records on hip-hop radio are pop records at their core, and half the records in fucking alternative radio are pop. And pop radio doesn't even know what the fuck it's doing.”

It's pretty clear to readers where her opinion lies, but where does her music land in this musical hot mess? Well, according to the songstress, “I end up pleading my case to alternative programmers — you're telling me that my music is too dark for pop, too pop for alternative, and urban radio won't touch it — so we have a record that doesn't fit in. And what is more alternative than that?”

But whether a critic deems her dark-indie-pop or a fan swears she's ecelctro-synth-alternative, you do you, Halsey.
