Let's talk numbers for 1 minute. According to RAINN, Every 98 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. Meanwhile, only 6 out of every 1,000 perpetrators will end up in prison. On the other end, according to Facebook, 4.7 million people around the world have engaged in the 'Me Too' conversation. But what is 'Me Too'? #MeToo as a hashtag recently has been circulating heavily through Facebook and other social media platforms. It began with Alyssa Milano asking her followers to reply “Me Too” if they had ever been sexually harassed or assaulted. #MeToo is a way for people to speak out about their experiences of sexual assault and to stand in solidarity with those who have suffered because of it.

Many stories of harassment in the media industry have spurred on this poignant conversation. The global news has been held captive by the Harvey Weinstein allegations. A frightening number of women have come forward to speak out against Weinstein. In their bravery, they are telling their survival stories – stories of rape, assault and harassment. The film industry is known for its use of the “casting couch” -- a reference to the couches in offices used for the sexual exploitation of aspiring actors by producers and directors. The music industry isn't free of the taint of sexual assault; it's just that in the music industry there is no couch, but rather, cold concrete floors.

The Gaslamp Killer Rape

William Bensussen, a DJ and producer who performs under the stage name – The Gaslamp Killer  – has been accused of rape.  The alleged rape survivor, Chelsea, Tweeted her story. She also reached out to Pitchfork and explained that she felt she needed to confront it for the sake of her mental health and for the sake of other women. She explains that Gaslamp Killer handed her and her best friend a drink at an event (their first of the night) and from there, their memory blacked out. She remembers him on top of her and being unable to stop the rape of both herself and her best friend. At the end of it, he allegedly dropped them in front of the entrance of the event; dropped them and left.

If you or someone you know is a rape survivor, here is a list of online resources for survivors of sexual assault. Alternatively, you too can be a part of the conversation by using the hashtag #MeToo or updating your status to 'Me too.' According to NBC, in less than 24 hours, there were more than 500,000 tweets and more than 12 million Facebook posts, comments and reactions on content that included #MeToo. Silence has been chaining down the voices of survivors for too long, it is time for people to be heard.
