Radiohead and Hans Zimmer have collaborated to work on the soundtrack for BBC’s forthcoming series, Planet Earth: Blue Planet II. The English rock band, who has received the Best Alternative Music Album award three times at the Grammy Awards, adding to a total of 22 awards from 79 nominations, across all organizations and festivals, now tackles a much more important task. Hans Zimmer is a German film score composer and record producer, who has composed music for over 150 films. With two immense talents coming together, it's apparent why the hype surrounding their collaboration is so massive.

Radiohead & Hans Zimmer

A rock band and composer came together and, instead of trying to come up with a tune, they worked to figure out a new method with which to create the sounds that would be suitable for the entire project. They began working with dots – arranging them to create waves and spheres of sound – it was inspired by pointillism and formed a vocabulary for both Radiohead & Hans Zimmer to use while bringing the sound of Blue Planet II to life.

"(Ocean) Bloom"

The team put their heads together to reimagine Radiohead's song, "Bloom." Today, the renamed "(Ocean) Bloom" stands as an orchestral track, but in 2011, it held a distinct Radiohead rock sound. Thom Yorke, Radiohead's frontman, wrote the original song, inspired by the original Blue Planet series released in 2001. Working with Hans Zimmer, the band turned their experimental rock song into a soundtrack for the sequel to the song's original muse.

Blue Planet 2 Trailer

"(Ocean) Bloom" features on the series' trailer, together with narration by Sir David Attenborough. The soundscape is backdropped by incredible footage, described by BBC as the 'most awe-inspiring shots and highlights from the new series.' The trailer was published online September 27th, 2017.
