Want to know why Chance wears a 3 hat? Whether Chance the Rapper is hanging with Lauren Hill, Childish Gambino or Obama, atop his head you'll find a 3 hat. If you see him perform–3 hat; in an interview–3 hat; out in public–3 hat...so what's the deal?

Chance the Rapper's Hat

First off, the reason Chance is constantly wearing a hat, harks back to his high school days. When he would go to school, he'd wear a hat; and every day, without fail, his hat would get confiscated. So now Chance wears his hat, constantly, in defiance.

The 3 comes in to play given Chance's latest release, his third mixtape, Coloring Book. When he toured, he wanted to have the name of his third mixtape printed on his hat, however, the title was a little too long so it didn't fit. (Even longer was its original title: The Magnificent Coloring Book.) So to simplify, he went with a 3.

Chance the Rapper's Girlfriend and Daughter

Surprisingly, Kristen Corley, Chance the Rapper’s girlfriend and their daughter, Kinsley Bennett don't don their own 3 hats. But without fail, Chance will hold down that 3 hat fort...even when he takes Kinsley to meet the Obamas.

Chance the Rapper Tiny Desk

He not only wears his hat while performing for big audiences, nor is it restricted to when he sings. Chance the Rapper occasionally wears his 3 hat while reciting poetry, which he did during his Tiny Desk performance.

Not sure what that is? It's a YouTube series put together by NPR, a radio station that over and above the normal station offering, host intimate performances at the desk of one of their shows' hosts–known as a Tiny Desk performance.

For his Tiny Desk performance, Chance the Rapper - in his 3 hat - sang Coloring Book’s “Juke Jam," followed by some poetry and concluded with a cover of Stevie Wonder's “They Won’t Go When I Go.”
