Why do we like this?

If you don't know Obnox, aka Nox, aka Bim Thomas, then you're about to. My sights are locked on him as an artist to watch for in 2015.

For the unacquainted, the Cleveland, Ohio musician has actually been around for a while pounding drums for This Moment in Black History and The Bassholes under his real name Lamont Thomas. Obnox is Thomas' solo project that has yielded three LPs and an abundance of EPs, though despite the number of releases under his belt, he remains relatively obscure to a wider audience.

Yesterday, Stereogum premiered "Cynthia Piper At The Gates of Dawn," one of the tracks off the upcoming album Boogalou Reed, which will be released on January 27. So, how does it fare?

Anytime an intro consists of a howling feedback and a 1-2-3-4 clash of the drum sticks, you know what's to follow is a guaranteed bludgeoning instrumental blow to the ear. And like many of punk rock's finest, that's exactly what the song vents after three seconds: a loud, merciless, goulash of chaos similar to Japanese psychedelic experimentalists DMBQ, but with its own manic charm.

While the lo-fi vocals don't exactly scream aggression in the manner of, say, Rob Tyner, it's neither a hindrance nor a weakness. There's plenty of ammo here for flippancy with riffs and chords hammering away with conviction, in addition to the feral guitar solos that screech endlessly until the end.

"Cynthia Piper At The Gates of Dawn" is cacophonous, ear-piercing, unapologetic, and by the end of it all, you're going to ask for more.
