Why do we like this?

“Light Up Your Day” is the latest single from Orphans Orphans. The Brisbane band is something of a super-group, featuring members of The Jungle Giants, Morning Harvey, Moses Gunn Collective, and The Belligerents, who reportedly came together “to create a brand new band as a home for the songs that didn’t quite fit the mould of their other musical projects.”

There’s something really solid about this song; it’s got a classic rock feel and a punchy vibe. It’s a little punky, a little funky, and totally catchy from start to end.

I love the simplicity of the verses. Each begins stripped-back and bare, featuring no more than a straightforward, heavy beat, husky vocals, and a wicked bass groove that’ll get your feet tapping in no time. Add to this a boppy, old-school filler, and the song instantly brightens up. It only leaves me wishing that it were sung by back-up female vocalists, accompanied by a full brass section. A set of wailing trumpets and rich saxophones would make this track go absolutely wild!

The driving bass really keeps it all together, and the guitar builds on the rhythms as it churns away throughout the latter half of the song. The track doesn’t hold back as it builds and grows, with some thunderous drums, heavy riffs and an explosive chorus.
A strong follow-up to their debut single “Orphans,” I have no doubt that Orphans Orphans will become radio and festival staples throughout the forthcoming summer.
