The all-powerful press release For Lord Echo's cover of Pharoah Sanders' "The Creator Has A Master Plan" states:
"New Zealand instrumentalist and producer, Lord Echo aka Mike Fabs, just released his sophomore album Curiosities via Bastard Jazz Recordings.Mike Fabs, known worldwide for his production work with New Zealand's biggest Reggae export, The Back Seeds, drew worldwide attention for his 2010 Lord Echo release Melodies and will present his second offering tomorrow which transcends genre and geography while flexing his dual-mastery of 60's production techniques and modern dancefloor aesthetics."
Lord Echo states:
"They are generally people who really love music and are often obsessed with various aspects of it. I'm not makin music for people for who it's just some background noise in their lives, I'm making music for people for whom it IS their lives. And for better or worse, I guess I am one of those people."
Now, with basics out of the way, today's cut is a cover of what is perhaps Pharoah Sanders' biggest hit, the spiritual call to arms "The Creator Has A Master Plan." Lord Echo takes the free jazz anthem and turns it into something you may hear at a backyard BBQ. Lisa Lims' vocals share some of the depth of the original but definitely keep things moving into the directions of a choreographed group dance number.
Jazz zealots may yell blasphemy, but I say it is a refreshing, if unorthodox, way of giving an iconic track new life.
