Why do we like this?

Pink Mountaintops is a project led by Black Mountain's Stephen McBean, who's joined by an ever-revolving roster of musicians from Cold War Kids, Sleepy Sun, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and so much more.

The band recently premiered brand new song "Asleep With An Angel," which was released as a limited-edition 7" vinyl in partnership with French lifestyle site APRIL 77 (it's already out of stock, but you can grab a digital copy on iTunes).

Given the time of the year, especially where I'm from, Pink Mountaintop's latest comes at a good time considering how it helps brew the image of sun and warmth during a long, dark, unforgiving winter. At least, that's what it did for me musically; lyrically, it could be a different story.

In other words, "Asleep With An Angel" is the kind of laid-back track with a wash of picked melodies and twanging chords that induces a surf rock-ish tone that's easy on the ears.

There's nothing out of the ordinary or experimental here if you're looking to make comparisons with other Black Mountain-related bands. In fact, things are pretty straightforward for the most part. However, the song's overall feel-good sound is catchy enough to inspire head sways as you listen, or, in my case, a hum in the middle of making lunch even though I don't actually have it playing.
