Governors Ball 2015: Festival Wrap-Up

Governors Ball played out on Randall's Island in New York City last weekend. Held over three fabulous days, the festival catered to a wide variety of music tastes and genres to a styled-up and adoring New York crowd. Despite the grounds being muddy in parts due to overnight rain, all of the fun happened on the stage. Here's some of what went down.

Front row center for Odesza
I somehow managed to muscle my way through the crowd to land a front row center spot for the Odesza set on the Friday afternoon. Most of the crowd were waiting to sing along to their big hit "Sun Models" but everyone danced out their other tracks too, notably their remix of ZHU's "Faded".

We got a taste of some new stuff from Odesza as well, in the form of a remix of Hayden James' "There's Something About You". It's an obvious remix choice when your recall Hayden James toured around with the Odesza boys last year as one of their support acts.

Florence is great
I was way back in the crowd for the Florence and the Machine set but it looked like she was getting around on stage barefoot. Bless her. She talked up how good it felt that she could run around the stage without her foot hurting too much. And that's what she did! Recall Florence broke her foot last April during her Coachella set after staging-diving into the crowd.

Flume's New York homecoming
The first Flume set I ever saw was in New York nearly three years ago. It was in the basement of a dive bar in the Lower East Side and about 20 people showed up. It might have been his first ever New York gig.

It seemed only fitting then that I got to see his New York homecoming of sorts. He had a bumping crowd of way more than 20 people heaving and hanging off his every well, beat. Miike Snow's Andrew Wyatt made a cameo vocal appearance in "Some Minds" that nicely rounded off Flume's newest track release from a few days earlier.

Then there was Deadmau5
Deadmau5 had the prime festival slot - middle day, main stage, final act of the night. For awhile there it seemed we weren't going to hear much out of Deadmau5 at all. Early into his set and the music cut in and out followed by a long pause of silence for more than a few minutes.

I later read that when the sound cut out, Joel started doing push ups on his newly designed set to entertain the crowd. It might have been his new fancy mouse trap-like stage pit that caused some of the technical issues. Once the sound came back, it cranked again and Deadmau5 fully delivered. Shout out to how good his latest track sounded live - the drop was an undeniable beast coming off that giant stage.
