Great ideas often happen quickly. After PB Wolf went to Instagram a few weeks ago to post the first record he ever distributed by Jay Dee, aka Jay Dilla, a decade plus back, House Shoes, the DJ/producer who pressed the record and got it to Wolf in the first place, got a bright idea.

The record, Jay Dee Unreleased EP, featured major label remixes Jay was commissioned to do but never saw an official release. Among assorted gems like D'angelo and Busta Rhymes flips was "Electric Piano" an interlude barely over 30 seconds.

Shoes inaugurated a sample-flipping contest daring modern beat-makers to use Jay Dee's interlude as source material. Though it's unclear what, if anything, will the actual prize of the contest be, the endeavor turned out more than 200 entries in about two weeks. We've picked five of our favorite, plus the original of course, for you to get a taste of the musical dialogue Shoes has sparked.

Feel free to head over to Shoes' own site and check out all the entries. They're on SoundCloud, where a like equals a vote. The entry with the highest number of votes, or likes, by June 1 will be declared the winner.
