Another round-up of the best tracks from Australia released in the past month. From funk to experimental electronica, and everything in between.

La Mar – “Tear You Down”

I discovered this stunning single last week, and described it as “dark, soulful and intoxicating.” Nothing has changed. La Mar is a Sydney-based duo, but they could equally be described as magicians, since they create such compelling sonic atmospheres. The shuddering bass, soaring vocals and sparse instrumental layers make “Tear You Down” absolutely irresistible.

Alice Ivy (Ft. RaRa) – “Almost Here”
If you’re a fan of The Avalanches, you’re going to be a big fan of Alice Ivy. Don’t be fooled by the cheerfully quirky sample that is the introduction – soon enough, the trumpets elbow in, and the hip-hop kicks off. Ultra smooth and slinky, this track is loaded with tight beats and seductive keys solos. I’m already calling this as one of my favorite tracks of 2016. If you’re in Australia, you can catch Alice Ivy live on tour until July 30.

The Lonely Rivals – “Save It For Tomorrow”
If you’re looking for an upbeat, feel-good song, you’ve found it. “Save it for Tomorrow” is the debut single from The Lonely Rivals, a trio comprising three already well-established Australian songwriters: Marcus Azon (Jinja Safari), Tenielle Neda (Neda) and Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe). I’ve had this one on repeat for over a week, and I’m sure you will, too.

Hayden James – “Just a Lover”
Hayden James is a Sydney-based producer who’s steadily been delivering slices of groovy, beat-laden electronica – “Something About You” climbed the charts last year, and “Just a Lover” looks set to do the same. Indie Shuffle reviewer Aaron Blum sums it up aptly, describing James’ new single as “pretty dang amazing”.

Braille Face – “Backwards/Medicated”
Melbourne-based producer Braille Face has created a brooding world of yearning and ambient electronica in “Backwards/Medicated”. The artist, who’s the first signee to Spirit Level records run by Tim Shiel and Wally de Backer (Gotye), is in no rush as he explores the variety of percussion timbres he’s hidden beneath layers of haunting harmonies.

Litche – “Look Up”
Another debut track, this time from Litche (née Sam Litchfield), who’s better known as half of the Australian/Hawaiian duo Haliia. In a style similar to that of Shigeto and Shlohmo, Litche has pieced together ethnic drum samples and fragmented vocal samples with a touch of meditative electronica. Layers upon layers of percussive beats tangle with one another, and I promise you the overall effect is nothing short of mesmerizing.

Chymes – “Grow”
Indie Shuffle writer Tobias Handke suitably describes “Grow” as a “a beautiful and well-produced slice of electronica with a great pop sensibility.” It’s one of four tracks from the Sydney-based duo’s debut EP, and it’s filled with trickling samples and delicately harmonised vocals.
