Sounds Australian - October 2016

October was filled with an incredible amount of new Australian music, including a bunch of anticipated album and EP releases, as well as some exciting new debuts. This month’s edition of Sounds Australian will introduce you to some of my favourites.

Melbourne songstress Woodes is back with another stunning single to remind us why she’s an artist we seriously need to watch. Co-produced with Simon Lam (who’s currently playing shows across Europe as half of Melbourne duo Kllo), “Rise” features a backing vocal choir that basically forms the “who’s who” of Australian music: Alex Lahey, LANKS, Lupa J, Nirrimi, Abraham Tilbury, Edward Vanzet, Golden Vessel, Tommy Wilson, Juice Webster, Uncle Bobby, Jayswaysand Batts. “Rise” is the lead single from Woodes’ self-titled EP, which is definitely worth a listen in full here. You can also catch Woodes performing as the main support for Ngaiire in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane from 25 November, with tickets available here.

If you’re a fan of Anderson .Paak, you’ll love Fortunes.’ and their new release “501’s” (on a side note, both artists have weirdly placed full stops in their names – our web host isn’t going nuts). The Melbourne-based duo comprising Conor McCabe and Barnaby Matthews weave together slinky stagger beats and trickling electronic phrases to form the bedrock of this smouldering R&B release. Fortunes. is playing shows in Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide to celebrate the single's release - more info is available here.

Goldielocks is a Sydney-based producer and vocalist who blends together spacey synths and richly textured beats to create electronica that sounds like a mix of Flying Lotus and Caribou. “Wishful” is a darkly textured sonic treat, filled with dub-step beats and synth-pop vocals. The track comes from Goldielock’s recently released three-track EP, Luminous, which you can catch on SoundCloud.

And last but not least, Tkay Maidza is back and in fine form with “Tennies”, an ear-busting single from her debut album, TKAY. The mix of thundering beats alongside Maidza’s trademark electrifying vocals will definitely make you want to hit that tennis court.
