Back in 2012 I went through a summer phase where I was addicted to lounge music. I'd sit behind a computer for 6 hours each day staring out the window and typing arbitrary values into an excel spreadsheet. Needless to say, I spent a lot of time daydreaming.
Lounge seemed to lull me into a meditative state. Instead of raging against the monotony, I immersed myself in a genre of music that's ultimate goal was to transport you somewhere more pleasant.
It sounds like textbook escapism, and that's probably because it is. On "Sun Lounger," Semi Precious confronts the slightly problematic reality of his chosen genre by analyzing the motivating factors behind it. With swelling synth washes, downtempo beats and an atmosphere barring modern psychedelia, it's comforting and interesting at the same time.
If you're in need of a mental vacation, check out Semi-Precious's music and look out for his debut Ultimate Lounge album, available July 22.
