Full disclosure: my bandmate and good friend Billy turned me onto We Were Promised Jetpacks a couple years back, but it wasn't until we attended a show in 2011 at the Metro in Chicago that I fully got it.
Don't get me wrong, I own both In the Pit of the Stomach and These Four Walls, which are incredible records, but it was who we met at the show that had a great influence on my opinion of the band, then and now. That individual was author Irvine Welsh. The man who has famously penned such classics as Trainspotting and Filth.
As we drank with him, he advocated for We Were Promised Jetpacks by stating that they were doing for Scottish music culture what he had done, and continued to do, for Scottish literary culture.
Projections aside, Irvine Welsh was correct. We Were Promised Jetpacks have been fearless in pursuing, expanding upon, and maturing their sound. "Safety In Numbers," the first single off their forthcoming album Unraveling, is an example of this relentless aim. The track showcases the bands depth and willingness to tame their sound, only to unleash it in a sonic fury.
I greatly look forward to hearing the album in total, but for now I will happily rock "Safety In Numbers" on repeat.
