You know who is great at recommending new sounds from talented artists? Other artists.
Some of my favorite discoveries resulted from a band’s casual Facebook post or lazy tweet. It’s how I found Chain Gang of 1974, The Mary Onettes, and dozens of others.
It’s also how I found today’s gem. Vancouver Sleep Clinic was kind enough to share this song by Australia's Whisperer, also known as singer/songwriter/producer Connor Grant. One listen, and I was smitten.
Grant recently made the decision to leave a band after a five year run. In his press release, he said he felt sadness over the departure, but also freedom and new creative liberty.
“During this period I had no job and a lot of spare time, so I started writing every day,” Grand has said. “There was no agenda or ambition for the material I was producing, it was just a creative outlet to explore. In truth, the songs on the EP are some of the first songs I have ever written.
“This EP is my proudest achievement so far in life. It’s about so much more than just the music, it’s about me finding my feet creatively and rekindling a love for music that I thought I had lost.”
“Confide” is one quarter of Whisperer’s self-titled, debut EP, which was written over a six-month spell. I find Grant’s voice and mood to be wonderfully similar to that of Florida’s Copeland. This emotional song is an impressive balance of gentle, weightless vocals, and lavish drums and guitar strums. In fact, this noise seem to be the only thing tethering Grant’s poetic spirit to this earth.
