What's so good?

Hmm, so lets tackle Big Scary’s song title, first off. According to the Triple J premiere of “Phil Collins,” Tom Iansek says ”it’s a reflection on the artists’s journey… It’s about their search for meaning, and their interpretation and recycling of other’s art to help them make sense of their own.”

This track is first single of the Australian duo’s second upcoming album, Not Art. I’m guilty of quickly falling for the spacious soundscape that exists in this song. I appreciate when there is room created for a listener to almost feel physically present in a synthetic environment, taking in the vocals as spiritual omnipresence. This musical sentiment pairs well with the band’s abstract intention. Iansek sings, “It’s not a book, it’s not a throne, it is you I require… but I will forfeit all my love because I know you’re up above somewhere.”

In addition to lead singer and instrumentalist Iansek, Big Scary includes drummer and back-up vocalist Joanna Syme. The pair crosses genres, producing everything from garage rock pop hits to pensive ballads. You can check out “Gladiator” and many more over on their SoundCloud.
