Sounds like: Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Ex-Loverman singer Gabriel Bruce seems to have a curious fixation on the challenges that some people endure while sleeping. For those who don't know, sleep paralysis is a phenomenon of intense pressure on your chest accompanied by powerful fear and hallucinations but you can't move a muscle. The aforementioned takes visual form in Bruce's video for "Sleep Paralysis," when dream worlds collide with haunting black and white imagery and moody lyrics. "I got this feeling I was dead, and there's nothing more" is a short glimpse into the creepy world this song creates with its heavy drums, deep vocal baritones, and cathartic keyboard accompaniment. The song starts off a bit slow but picks up around the 1:30 mark with subtly propelling beats, eventually thrusting onward at 2:45 with quicker rhythms, mild cutaways of Bruce dancing, and some deep, sexy crooning. For visual pleasure, the Sleep Paralysis 7" will include a 50-page Dada-influenced illustration book on sleep paralysis, featuring cuttings and ephemera of people's recollections of the sensation. The book will also contain poetry, fragments from French surrealist Paul Eluard, and medical texts. Sleep Paralysis drops December 5 via Off Modern.
