Odd Future is fast becoming one of the most talked about things in music, and deservedly so. It seems that most of their tracks getting hyped involve group leader Tyler, The Creator, but I actually think Hodgy Beats — his second in command, by my reckoning — is a better rapper. As well as “Alright” (and a lot of other awesome stuff part of MellowHype), there is this track: “Mystery.”
It’s been lurking around the Internet for a while, and I’m still not entirely sure where it’s come from. I’m surprised it hasn’t not blown up more though, because this is one of the best tracks released under the OFWGKTA crew. On this “Moody Blue” sample, he actually sounds a lot like Lupe Fiasco, if a little more twisted. It makes an interesting change from the normal OF, pure fury style.
Also it has to be said: this guy has the samples absolutely mastered; two of the best samples I’ve heard this year have been all his. While Tyler’s Goblin may be out later this month, I’m actually looking forward to Hodgy Beats’ offering more, even though it is something of a mystery.
