What's so good?

I first began sharing my thoughts on rap music on the Internet about seven years ago. I quickly found that the specific type of rap music I was interested in put me in a very small circle of similar minds. One of those minds was a young man named Kenny from Portland, Oregon.

I first met Kenny through his work with Waajeed and his Bling 47 crew. He helped introduce me to some of my favorite and lesser knowns artists like Ta'Raach. After a few years Kenny started his own blog, Fresh Selects. He gave shine to talent from the Pacific Northwest and beyond. After multiple years of nearly daily postings, Fresh Selects shut its doors. But instead of an end, this was a beginning. Fresh Selects is now Kenny's label.

His first release is from a mutual friend and incredibly talented artist, Mndsgn. Kenny is reissuing Mndsgn's breatharian project that was previously confined to just 1's and 0's, and the album will now live on as a cassette. One might think re-mastered, bonus tracks and liner notes would make for an enticing purchase, but Kenny's gone a step further and got Mnd to include a full mix, Frugal Earth Vol.2, with the cassette.

It's from that mix that today's track is selected. "Phyllis" is a remix of a cover. "Do For Love" is one of Bobby Caldwell's biggest hits and casts a long shadow over hip-hop (just ask J Dilla or 2pac). Our main man Mnd takes a trip to left field and tweaks Phyllis Hyman's version of the cut for a mellow head-nodder. Cop a tape!
