Out in Australia by the time you read this, Melbourne's Super Magic Hats brings you his debut, self-titled EP. It's been a big 18 months for the producer, the time it's taken for him to write and record his first full release. His first single, "Wind," immediately generated comparisons to artists like Flying Lotus and Gold Panda, and he was chosen to support Shigeto on his trip to Australia.
Given the lengthy wait for this release, you'd expect a strong showing "“ and that's exactly what you get. He began with as many as 35 tracks, and the six that he's finished with are excellent "“ there's no filler to be found here. "Lush" is the word which keeps coming back to me when listening to this; his creations are so perfectly structured and layered. It's bright, glo-fi at its best, and nothing exemplifies this more than featured single "What You Find," which also shows off his excellent use of vocal sampling. Given the quality from track to track, this is one of those EPs made to listen from start to finish.
Expect to hear a lot more from one of Australia's most promising electronic artists. This is a definite find for those looking for some fresh new, well-made glo-fi.
