Why do we like this?
Today is the time of the album. While this may certainly be arguable (what topic's not up for debate in music land these days?), I believe that the single is becoming a fattened and fallen royal, oblivious to the album striding in to regain the throne.

For those who who might be in agreement, you'll find that ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead embody my revolutionary belief best with their forthcoming two-part (or two-sided) jam-album, Tao of the Dead. Or, in truth, they frankly don't care.

The Austin-based band finally created their proggiest and noisiest brew after six albums, and it's a 50-minute odyssey, due out February 8, on their own Richter Scale Records and Superballmusic.

Mythic and demonstrative, exploring themes of art, death and rebirth, the album is ambitious. It's quintessential Trail of Dead - as they're fondly referred to - and a bit of their own rebirth.  There's a freedom and joy to the album (the opening track is aptly named "Introduction: Let Us Experiment"), even in seemingly somber moments ("Cover the Days Like a Tidal Wave"), and  fans can only hope Tao of the Dead is the harbinger of the next creative phase of this seasoned art band.

For those that still glean excitement from the visual and the tactile, the album is accompanied by singer/guitarist Conrad Keely's artwork in a partial "media book" form, which is also slated to be released episodically throughout the year.

Catch them on a co-headlining tour with Surfer Blood this spring, kicking off April 29, at New York's Bowery Ballroom.
