Animal Collective My Girls

Music snobs, I know you are wondering why "My Girls" by Animal Collective being posted today, on a blog that self-toutes NEW music discovery. A fair question, since the song is verging into the more recent throwback tracks of the indie world. A simple answer: it is amazing, and one of my all-time favorite songs. If that's not sufficient, there's also this: word on the street is that 2012's Record Store Day is going to bring about another Animal Collective release, making it their 11th release in twelve years. No big deal.

2009 brought us an epic track "My Girls" off Merriweather Post Pavillion by the impressively experimental band from NY/Lisbon/D.C. (by way of Baltimore, just to make matters a little more geographically confusing). Not only is it uplifting teeming with effervescent euphoria, the buoyant, almost chanted words are something the entire world would do better to model: "I don't mean to seem like I care about material things, like my social status, I just want four walls and adobe slabs for my girls." Now that's taking minimalism to a lovely extreme. The ecstatic beat fortified by Animal Collective's insightful, inspiring lyrics makes for a perfectly divine song everyone should keep handy.
