If you want some raw, emotional, grungy rock and roll, look no further than Bully. Though they are a young new band, they write and play with the same confidence and poise of a rock band that's been around since the early 90s. And that's what Bully reminds me of -- single "Trying" reminds me of growing up listening to the alternative rock bands that shaped the grunge movement and shaped the sound of my childhood.
Bully is fronted by Alicia Bognanno, who has her own history with sound mixing and audio engineering. With Bully, however, she is front and center, and completely owns the vocals. Crunchy guitar and bass add support and fill out the sound, giving the same feeling as the early indie rock sounds of The Pixies, Sonic Youth, and Bikini Kill. Although it's an alternative rock song, "Trying" is not without compelling pop hooks. "Trying" is catchy, no doubt. There's also a guitar solo that would crack a smile on the face of J. Mascis.
Bully is signed to StarTime Records and their record Feels Like is slated to be released on June 23, 2015. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out.
