Why do we like this?

Despite folk taking a bit of a backseat in my musical landscape of late, what with the slew of online producer sensations (thanks SoundCloud), it's still nice to hear a track with nothing but guitar and vocals.

This is what drew me into Melbourne-based Dan Southward's latest release, "Barabas." A heartfelt song with slight religious undertones, the warm guitar tone, haunting, emotion-filled vocals, and storybook lyricism and songwriting drew me in right away. With a voice that could be likened to Matt Corby, Dan is definitely an artist that should be gaining some recognition, and I truly hope that it happens very soon.

Looking at his SoundCloud page, it appears Southward has taken a bit of a break from recorded music; the most recent track before this live version of "Barabas" was uploaded three years ago. Hopefully this latest offering means there is more to come, but in the meantime feel free to support him on Facebook and SoundCloud.
