Why do we like this?
Melbourne-based Darren Sylvester could be described as a one-man creative hub. The decorated photographer, sculpter, and videographer also possesses an abundance of musical talent, as his latest single "Dream or Something Like That" will prove. Sylvester is currently gearing up for the release of his second album (his 2008, self-titled debut was created as a soundtrack to one of his installations). Off By Heart is due out on October 4.
Described as a "classically produced rush of an album," the first single is just that -- euphoric in every sense of the word. Building from the start, things open up quickly with the frantic, driven choruses paving the way for Sylvester's effortlessly cool vocals to run amok. This track gets better the longer it goes on, with the pulsing guitar lines during the last minute creating a glistening climax before the track abruptly shuts off. It's also worth noting that Sylvester plays every instrument on the album!
His music does have a soundtrack feel to it, as if it's part of something bigger or telling a story itself. Whatever his intentions, "Dream or Something Like That" is a very cool single.
