Crop tops, high-waisted jeans, and flannels, oh my! In the past couple of years, the 90s surged back again, particularly in the fashion realm. But if you're musically stuck in my favorite decade or just plain yearning for the old school, nostalgic sounds of hip-hop unencumbered by the pop collaborations and pretentious "substance" of today's rap, you'll enjoy the underground flavored sounds of Doc Whisper.
"Stupid Choices," off his most recent mixtape, Writer's Life, is a vivid illustration of this Orange County rapper's keen ability to tell stories, a seemingly lost skill these days. With each verse, a "stupid choice" is compellingly highlighted, culminating with the story of Doc's getting stabbed five times, sans the boastful, male bravado present in the majority of hip-hop music. I especially enjoy the repetitively infectious, almost hypnotic hook.
If nonconformity is your thing, this is for you.
