Australia's favorite thrash-pop duo, DZ Deathrays, return with stunning new single "Northern Lights." While I wasn't aware the Brisbane lads were releasing a new tune, what really took me by surprise was the new direction of their signature sound. Gone are the heavy drum beats and wildly chaotic guitar riffs, replace by melodic fills and more streamlined, indie-like guitar licks.
There's a very English feel to "Northern Lights," and while not as heavy as some of their previous material, the steady build towards crashing cymbals and layered, reverb-fuelled guitars signals a maturity in their songwriting.
These boys are the real deal, and while "Northern Lights" is only one song, it does make you wonder what they have in store for us with their sophomore LP. To be honest, if it's half as good as this tune, put me down for two copies!
