Why do we like this?

Canadian producer Elaquent cites beatmakers like J Dilla and DJ Premier as early influences that helped guide him down the music production path.

"Golly Jeez," the first single off Elaquent's upcoming Good Karma LP, reminds me of those legendary artists as well as newer boundary-pushing hip-hop heads like Kanye West, Hudson Mohawke, and Flying Lotus. It also reminds me of Cowboy Bebop and Chrono Trigger.

The LP, out July 17 on Huh What & Where, is a diverse portfolio of 8-bit synths, sharp snare drums, and enough off-kilter hi-hats and chirps to keep me highly entertained.
