Why do we like this?

I'm a little late to the table, but I actually heard Melbourne's electro/synth duo GL for the first time this weekend at the a festival in Sydney. It was really, really enjoyable.

Great energy, even better beats, and a stage presence that resonated super well throughout the audience. Needless to say, I was an instant fan, so I'm excited to share their new track "Number One" here today.

GL is comprised of vocalist Ella Thompson and producer Graeme Pogson. Since releasing their maiden EP Love Hexagon in 2014, they've steadily built a name for themselves, including landing a support slot for Chet Faker throughout his Australian tour later this year.

Simply put, "Number One" is sublimely funky. While the style isn't exactly new or innovative, GL do it in a way that makes it feel bright, fresh and clean. I'm particularly digging Thompson's vocals: her tone is confident and cool, freely soaring above the instrumental layers. No effects, no pitch shifts, just sweet, sweet, crooning.

If you're in Melbourne, you can catch GL at their official "Number One" single launch on Sat, October 24 at the Gasometer Hotel.
