Why do we like this?

This song launched me into another dimension, jostled me around for a bit, and spit me back out at a million miles per hour before landing me face down in a bottomless pit of both my fondest and heaviest memories. It’s incredible.

“Can We Work It Out” is the first U.S.-released single off of 22-year-old Australian singer-songwriter Gordi’s debut EP Clever Disguise, (set to arrive May 13 via Jagjaguwar), and what a majestic piece of art it is.

Heartwarming acoustics wrapped in sweeping waves of electronic production behind Gordi’s angelic vocals make this track tug at the sublime in a way that feels universal and yet deeply personal at the same time. Example: I showed it to a friend and he said it made him want to give his dog a big hug. There’s just something about it that rouses the heart and the soul.

For a bit of context, the nutshell story goes that Gordi, born Sophie Payten, spent her early years on a farm in the remote town of Canowindra, where her family has lived for four generations. She then relocated to Sydney to attend boarding school and then the university where she currently studies medicine when she's not writing/recording/performing. This combination of a down-to-earth small-town past and years of dorm room writing yields a sound that’s inherently intimate, refreshingly alive, and powerful enough to resonate with an entire world of listeners.
