The Souls of Smoke and Funk
A song hiding a revolutionary narrative behind beautiful neo-soul sounds creates a montage-like effect of education, narrative, and a funky soundscape
Greentea Peng has been one of those artists that always find themselves playing at a party and I'm always going "Who is this ? I Love it!" - only for me to then go home and completely forget the name, but the song is stuck in my head endlessly.
With "Free My People" I have finally discovered them in their fullest and I'm obsessed. It's a beautifully constructed song of funky soul sounds and rhythmic funk inspirations thrown into a quiet protest of smoke and mirror vocals that on a first listen sounds like a good time only to reveal a riotous protest against the oppression pushed onto the narrator's community.
It's a conscious and prominent track that I'll always recommend...enjoy
