Over the past three years, I've submitted reviews for almost 500 tracks from Australian artists. These reviews have covered a huge range of styles, from rock to electronica to folk and pop -- plus everything in between.
However, there has been one genre that I have shied away from (shied away from is a nice way of saying "avoiding like the plague") -- the much criticized, but hugely popular juggernaut that is Aussie hip-hop.
Today, I have finally broken my boycott.
Sydney duo Horrorshow has developed into one of the more critically acclaimed hip-hop acts this country has produced, having released three albums to date (including this year'sKing Amongst Many). One of the singles off this record, "Dead Star Shine," has just been remixed by Raph Lauren (one half of fellow Sydney duo Jackie Onassis), and it's actually pretty good. The clear Australian accent that many people find a bit harsh is still there, but it's somewhat softened by the fluid production. The finish to the remix is especially impressive, with the track coming to a smooth, beat-driven finale that will appeal to fans of acts like Flume and label mates Hermitude.
Horrorshow's producer Adit has actually been mentioned on Indie Shuffle before, with his work on tracks from local indie electro act Left., so my interest in this track shouldn't be a total surprise.
