Why do we like this?

You only need to make it halfway through the first track to see why Fun Summer Vol. 1, iLoveMakonnen's surprise EP, is so aptly titled.

Although he raps on the rest of the EP, "Killing Me" is, by all measures, a pop song, marking a shift in the rapper's discography. 

Hearing Makonnen on a fun, flashy dance tune is basically my version of Christmas morning. I've long awaited for a male rapper to successfully incorporate pop and dance sounds into their music, à la Nicki Minaj or Azealia Banks.

As his first release since coming out as gay in March, perhaps it marks a shift towards more elements of pop and camp in his music. I'll be hoping for a Fun Summer Vol. 2 to deliver even more.
