Why do we like this?
Ilana Weaver, better known by her stage name Invincible, is a shining example of revolutionary independent music. Forsaking offers for corporate backing, she independently released her debut album Shapeshifters in 2008 through her label Emergence Media.

Her latest release is the two-track EP Detroit Summer, produced by fellow Detroit native Waajeed. The leading track, "Detroit Summer," is a powerful retort to claims that Detroit is a blighted wasteland. Weaver admits many of the problems that plague the Motor City, but she also sheds light on local community action aimed at building the city back up from the roots.

"They call Mo Town a ghost town but the city's vibrant," she raps, backed by a bulbous bass line and stuttering drums.

The B-side is "Emergence," and if "Detroit Summer" is musically set in the middle of the night, this song sounds like the first rays of sunshine of the dawn. Armed with a rock guitar sample and arena-sized drums, Invincible flows optimistically about building new futures; "Emergence, this is the verge of an earth shift," she quips.
