I am often surprised by the direction culture takes. For instance, I never would have predicted that – after one quick single repurposing his classic “Baby Got Back” – Sir Mix A Lot would be experiencing a career resurgence.
Following the success of the truly abysmal hit “Anaconda,” Sir Mix A Lot is riding the momentum with the superior, funkier “If I Can,” a collaboration with the San Francisco-based indie pop group KiWi TIME. The riff on “If I Can” is itself a throwback – the song blends an 80s sensibility with Sir Mix A Lot’s own brand of nostalgia for simple, driven hip-hop. This is truly the sound an artist like Sir Mix A Lot should be cultivating with his newfound relevance in 2014. To their credit, KiWi TIME prove themselves to be savvy musicians with a good ear for catchy pop synth.
Think “Radioactive” meets “Get Lucky.”
