“Even if I'm 1 in 100,000 / I'ma stay strong, never backing down from / Anything that comes, I'ma stand my ground son / I give you my word, that's one you can count on."
This is the chorus from L-FRESH The LION’s “1 in 100,000”, a serve of powerful hip-hop with equally important lyrics. The track opens with the tumbi, a traditional Panjabi instrument, before it cannons into clanging drums, shuddering bass beats and a wall of synthesizers.
L-FRESH is inspired by the hip-hop movement of late 1990s America, and he combines the era’s social justice movement with his ancestral roots of the Sikhs from Panjab, India. The end result is big-beat music, woven with oriental melodies and empowering lyrics.
“We wanted to create something that’ll get people moving,” L-FRESH explains in the press release, regarding his work with the track's producer, Michael McGlynn. “Lyrically speaking, the song is about standing up for what’s right, even if it seems like the whole world is against you.” With the thundering drums and strident vocals, this is definitely the track that will give you the strength needed to stand your ground – even if you’re the 1 in 100,000.
L-FRESH is an ambassador for All Together Now, which is currently Australia’s only national charity to address racism. He’s also founder of the Power To The Peaceful Community, an online community and clothing label that aims to develop meaningful dialogue about how we can work to achieve peace.
