Why do we like this?

Let me start this review by saying that I had been eagerly anticipating seeing Smokey Robotic perform live ever since I was introduced to them last year. After quickly developing a love for their music, there was no doubt in my mind that their live show would be a blast to attend.

As soon as I walked into the venue, the energy felt electrifying -- as if I was immediately feeding off of everyone's positive vibes. There were three opening bands: My Midnight Heart, No Way Josie and Skyzoo. Unfortunately, my late ass missed My Midnight Heart, but from what I was told, they were completely amazing and left everyone sincerely impressed. No Way Josie and Skyzoo did a proper job at bringing the energy and hyping up the crowd. Their sets were so powerful and engaging that you couldn't help but be encapsulated by the sheer amounts of innovative talent in that lineup.

All of the hype was stirring up the room as the crowd anticipated Smokey Robotic's arrival on stage. As I was in the ladies room before their set, I overheard a girl pining over the guys in the group and proudly announcing the Smokey Robotic tattoo she sported. Then it dawned on me -- I really must be in for something special. It seemed to me that these guys had a solid following, perhaps even cultish, and I was about to experience that camaraderie.

Finally, Smokey took the stage and wasted no time doing the damn thing. Normally they're a four-member group, but their DJ/producer, Konrad, was busy taking care of business in Vancouver. Despite that fact, the rest of the guys approached the stage with mics slingin', ready to bring the house down.

And that they did. From start to finish, their set was strong and hypnotizing. There was this great exchange between Smokey and the crowd; everyone was picking up what they were putting down and that energetic trance was truly infectious. My friend, who attended the show with me and had never listened to them before, just kept thanking me through their set because it was that good. The whole time the crowd couldn't help but move... it almost seemed involuntary. But if you think about it, if you're at a show where the music is a mix of hip hop,R&B, pop and dance, how can you not move your body? Smokey Robotic must know this. They've got the formula to make you move.

All in all, Smokey Robotic is now one of my go-to recommendations for anyone who's looking to have a genuinely, ridiculously fun time. Check out their tour dates and if you're able to catch these guys perform live, I urge you to treat yourself.
