Why do we like this?
A lot of people I talk to that don't like electronic music complain that anyone with a laptop can do it. Mochipet is one of those laptop producers, but he is a shining example of how an electronic producer can not only produce creative music, but can develop and perfect the art over the years the way any musician or composer would. Plus, the man has produced more music since he started giving away CD-Rs to anyone that asked in 2002 than many artists put out in a career. Bunnies and Muffins is his first of two full-length releases this year, he released two more last year, and he constantly tours around the world. Did I mention he has his own record label that houses eight more artists? Did I also mention he performs in a purple dinosaur costume? How could you not love this guy?

These past few years, he's been showing off his versatility. Known for producing jarring, glitch-heavy breakcore, Mochipet broke out of his shell two years ago to release Microphonepet, a 20 track album featuring an army of Bay Area MCs who added a new vocal element to his production. The result demonstrated his ability to refine his beats and produce some top-notch party music with enough twists and turns to make it an interesting bedroom listen as well. This year, the appropriately titled Bunnies and Muffins shows off his softer side.

But personalities aside, this is a great record through and through. The music is bright and the beats are anything but formulaic, making for a pleasantly cerebral head-trip. This is not only a great introduction to the skeptics of electronic music looking to get past the typical "oom tss oom tss" repetition, but is a great listen for even veteran electronic music fans looking for something mellow and uplifting.
