Why do we like this?

Upcoming Gold Coast artist Montgomery has just dropped the first official single from her forthcoming debut, New Clear War.

I posted her debut single here a while back, and I'm really excited that "Piñata" is identifiably Montgomery-sounding, but also a little heavier, a little edgier.

From the very first moments, "Piñata" is riveting and radiant. The bass enters almost instantly, with a surprisingly heavy thud. It really drives the track, laying in perfect contrast to the cherubic melody. And while her voice still has the hypnotic purity of liquid gold, the music adds strength and fearless maturity.

Tom Iansek's (Big Scary, #1 Dads) production skills demonstrate an impossibly precise understanding of the relationship between depth and light, of space and of density. There's an impeccable tonal balance throughout this track. I like it a lot.

I can see why this was chosen as the public's second taste of Montgomery. We're familiar with her soothing, crystalline tone -- but now we're seeing that it's merely the tip of this iceberg.

New Clear War comes out on October 24 via Sydney label I OH YOU.
