Is Frank Ocean Gay?

In Frank Ocean's statement regarding the death of Prince in 2016, we can start to see that this is an artist who has wracked his brains around the complexities of living an LGBTQ+ life. About Prince, he says, "He made me feel more comfortable with how I identify sexually simply by his display of freedom from and irreverence for obviously archaic ideas like gender conformity."

In 2011, he posted a beautiful statement (that can be read below) on Tumblr that was considered to be his coming out to the world. In it, he describes his first love at 19, and how real it felt in comparison to the girls he had cared for in previous relationships. He lets us in to a world of silent romance and the heart-wrenching shattering of a love that couldn't be expressed just yet. It all comes through in his song "Thinking About You" which you can hit play on below.

There is no denying that Frank Ocean is part of the LGBTQ+ community... but of what use is this information? Can we use it to learn, to grow, to challenge our own limiting belief systems? If yes, then let's shout it from the rooftops. Let's embrace the intricacies of humanity the same way we do the numerous musical genres. Every song speaks differently to each person; this does not negate the beauty of the song.

TL;DR Yes, yes he is bisexual, and that's cool.

Frank Ocean's Acceptance of Being Gay

Frank Ocean's Lyrics

When we start looking into it, through his lyrics, it becomes clearer that he identifies as bisexual. Many of our fellow humans seem to put bisexuality down, saying things like 'can't they just choose?' or 'they're just greedy, wanting both.' Bisexuality is the preference for either gender and the deep duality of living a bisexual life is personified in his release of two albums at the same time–Blonde and Endless. His reason being for the 'twin' albums: "I've got two versions."

Some Lyrics That Sing Pride

  • From "Chanel": My guy pretty like a girl.
  • From "We All Try": I believe that marriage isn’t between a man and woman but between love and love.
  • From "Oldie": I’m hi and I’m bi.
  • From "Good Guy": Here’s to the gay bar you took me to.

Frank Ocean Cancels Primavera Sound

In more recent news, remember when Frank Ocean was announced as the headliner for Primavera Sound? Well now it's just been released that he's pulled out. He has cancelled due to production delays, and he is stirring up the music-news scene big time – in other words, he will be greatly missed at the festival. Primavera Sound has apologized and is offering refunds to people holding tickets for the day he was said to be headlining.

A side note: Jason & Dylan from Indie Shuffle are in Barcelona ready to get their festival on, so watch this space for updates from Primavera Sound.

Let's Wrap This Up

To conclude: is Frank Ocean gay? Well, yeah, somewhat, but as he said on Tumblr, "I took the breaths, and carried on," and so should we.
