The Life Aquatic, the 2004 film by Wes Anderson, may have been the eccentric director’s most exemplary work. The immersive world of the uniformed Zissou society modeled off of Jacque Cousteau may be most memorable though for the contributions of Brazilian musician Seu Jorge.

As crew member Pele dos Santos in the film, Jorge crooned Portuguese interpretations of David Bowie’s most influential works including "Life on Mars?", "Rebel Rebel" and "Five Years." The covers were featured on the original soundtrack, and later complimented by the release of The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions, which featured 7 additional outtakes.

Of Jorge’s re-workings Bowie himself said “Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with.” Despite the praise, Jorge had never toured explicitly in support of the works.

That changed this month as Jorge reprised his performance and once again donned the red cap in honor of the late Starman, announcing a month long 13-date tour.

That tour stopped in Chicago last evening, where there was an air of formality at Pilsen’s Thalia Hall. Many attendees themselves wore redcaps and evening attire to the seated, sold out, two set affair.

Greeted by an “intern” who explained the stage would see two performers this night, Seu, and in spirit, Bowie. The sentiment rang true as Jorge took the stage and instantly dived into "Ziggy Stardust," before “Changes” and “Rebel Rebel”.

Wearing a complete Zissou uniform, complete with branded Adidas, and even a prop Glock 17 strapped to his thigh, Jorge regaled the audience with tales of working on the film with Anderson, meeting the likes of Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe and Jeff Goldblum on his first day, and in some instances writing songs on the fly - like working out “Life on Mars” for a pregnant Kate Blanchett.

Jorge also shared a personal inspiration in returning to pay tribute, explaining just a few days after the passing of David Bowie, his own father passed as well, dedicating the nights performance to him as well.

The entire affair was an emotional journey through these beautiful works that have come to mean so much to fans of both The Life Aquatic and David Bowie.
