Stephen Schmuldt, aka Holborn Circuit, came to my attention early last year when he dropped a series of incredible remixes of Taylor Swift, Kirby Kaiser, Katy Perry, Njomza-Nightmare, and more. He has a knack for taking infectious pop songs and giving them a sub-cultural guise that washes them of "guilty pleasure" status, implementing a hot-party-track notion. In other words, Schmuldt takes your average radio hits and transforms them into underground pop gems. This arises from his insatiable production and appetite for making music.
This time around, he's taking on Los Angeles-based Paris Carney's single "Astronaut." She describes herself as if "Ella Fitzgerald and Joni Mitchell had a baby raised by Andre 3000 + a laptop," and creates atmospherics that are profoundly interesting and wholly befitting. The secret sauce of Holborn Circuit is that he takes what the previous artist created and builds something new, but reminiscent of the original, refraining from overt horns, bass drops, and other tacky remix insertions that have run amuck.
Holborn Circuit is bound to give us many more precious remixes and originals this year, so keep your ears open.
