One of the best music festivals of the entire summer in New York City is right around the corner!
Now in its seventh year, Governors Ball will be held over three packed days and nights this coming weekend—June 2 to June 4. The fun takes place on Randall’s Island, a smaller island off the north east tip of Manhattan. Insider tip on this year’s festival—there will be mini golf!
To try to summarize the line up for a festival like this in a few paragraphs will never do it justice. What I will say is the line up has appeal for a range of music tastes, with a mix of old and new acts, and genre representation ranging from rock to rap to electronic.
What catches my eye looking over the line up is a couple of things—French act Air are performing for the first time in the U.S. for many years (I think seven). I haven’t seen Chance The Rapper on a stage yet and I can’t wait to. Plenty to rock out to with Phantogram, Tool and a bunch of quality others. And what is this Mark Ronson vs Kevin Parker mash up thing all about? If those two want to duel it out on a stage, that's very okay with me.
The French theme continues with Phoenix headlining Saturday night and I’m giddy thinking about how Childish Gambino’s recent album will play out on a live stage. Electronic fans like me will get excellent value out of live sets from Rufus, Flume, Gryffin, and if you’re into a more intense electronic festival experience, you’ll probably want to head to Marshmellow’s set.
In all, Governors Ball is my personal pick of the New York City music festivals. I look forward to it every year for the quality of the line up, the enthusiastic crowds it attracts and the chance to watch the sun setting over the Manhattan skyline surrounded by good friends and the best live music anywhere on the planet.
