Melbourne’s Rat & Co produced my favorite album of 2013 (full list here, if you’re interested) with their debut LP One (壱) Uno (壹) Ein. As a person who’s life is overflowing with music, there aren’t too many albums these days which I listen to more than once, but this record was a huge anomaly to my regular behavior as I kept returning to it.
As you can imagine, I was pretty chuffed to learn that the guys are already putting the finishing touches on a second album, and even more pleased when I was asked to premiere its first single “Vocal Insanity.”
When your expectations are as high as mine were listening to this track, you can often be a little let down – but, if anything, this new release has only strengthened my respect for the band. While that floating, ambient demeanor has been maintained, “Vocal Insanity” tends toward a more beat-driven formula. Toss in plenty of eclectic samples and Rat & Co’s typically supreme layering, and what you get is some of the most stunning electronic production Australia currently boasts.
Rat & Co’s second album Binary is scheduled for release in the coming months, so be prepared to hear a lot more from them right here!
