UK singer Raye may only be 17 years old, but her new single "Hotbox" shows a maturity and musical depth far beyond her years. The R&B vibe and a seductive groove really stand out, particularly with through her sensual, soulful vocals and gorgeous piano chords driving the rhythm.
She’s cited her personal influences as Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, and Lauryn Hill. It's easy to feel that classic sentimentality seeped into this totally contemporary style, and the result is wonderful.
This track is simple and catchy, and shows loads of potential. I can definitely picture this track performed as a slow-burner in the live setting, accompanied by nothing more than piano and hi-hat. R&B-pop at its finest, I'm looking forward to hearing more from Raye.
