Why do we like this?

Every volume of DJ/producer House Shoes' The Gift series has been heat. Each volume has featured a new up-and-coming producer and has been given the limited edition vinyl, throwback cover design, free digital download for the fans.

The eighth volume features Detroiter Raj Mahal. A dozen joints of moody, hard-hitting hip-hop are capped by one joint that hits home. According to House Shoes' Instagram:

"I was gonna be in The Gift series. On Xmas Eve I put the 88 joints he sent me into my phone to go thru. The next day my lil homie Smokey The Cat died 15 mins after my son opened his presents. I had to go to the store after all this and pressed play on Raj's joints soon as I got in the car. This was the first track in the playlist. Shit sounded like Smokey's fucking funeral. I knew when I heard this that I wanted the world to hear it. I just had to find 11 more joints out of those 88. I did. #RIPSmokeyTheCat"
