When I think about chillwave, Washed Out is the first act that comes to mind. Ernest Greene, the man behind Washed Out, and his bandmates are out to prove that chillwave is still a fun source of music. Their current tour, which features Small Black as the opener, is selling out nationwide.
I was able to catch them at the Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale, Florida last Saturday night. Greene brought along four other musicians, and they hit the stage around 9:40pm with the opening track to 2013's Paracosm, "Entrance." Greene grabbed his acoustic guitar as he entered the stage and they went right into "It All Feels Right" after that.
I was hooked from the start, almost in a trance-like state as all the other songs flowed out of Greene. Their set went on for about an hour and 15 minutes, and ended with members of Small Black crowd surfing during the encore.
Overall, this was one of best shows I've seen this year - it's totally understandable why their shows are sold out everywhere. Washed Out is truly the best thing that the chillwave genre has ever seen.
